Abstract: | In the paper substrate Lappish toponymy of Russian Karelia is analyzed, and the obtained results are compared with those for the Russian North (Vologda and Arkhangelsk regions of Russia). It is concluded that Karelian toponymy contains nearly the same set (with some exceptions) of “differentiating Lappish toponymic indicators” (selected by A.K. Matveev) as the toponymy of the Russian North. In addition, a number of other typical Lappish toponyms (or groups of toponyms) are adduced for the North of Karelia. The paper also contains a demonstration of some special features of Russian phonetic adaptation of Lappish toponyms in Karelia. |
