Abstract:	The article is devoted to certain aspects of academic biography of a well – known Russian specialist in Byzantine studies Georgi L. Kurbatov (1929–2003). Particular attention is given to the period of education that G. L. Kurbatov spent in Leningrad University. Authors analyses the formation of academic interests of the scientist and his concept of history of Byzantine Empire.
