Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of the contribution by V. N. Yurgevich (1818–1898) into the investigations and preservation of the antiquities of the Crimea. He was the Professor of the university in Odessa and participated in the activity of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities. The organization was founded in 1839 and became the first scientific archaeological society in Russia. V. N. Yurgevich was a member of Society (1859), secretary (1875–1883), curator of the museum (1883–1895), vice-president (1883–1898). In his studies, V. N. Yurgevich appealed to different periods of history of the Crimea (Antiquity, Middle Ages, XVIII–XIX century). His research interests cover the issues of epigraphy, numismatics, sphragistics, history, and archeology. In addition, he took part in solving the problems of conservation of monuments, development of methods of archaeological excavation, the popularization of historical and archaeological research.
