Abstract: The article analyses the history of Byzantine aristocratic family of Spondyloi. On the basis of written data and sphragistic sources 8 representatives of this family were identified. The rise of Spondyloi is probably related to court eunuch Michael Spondylos. He managed to get some of his relatives appointed to positions in civil and canon administration. One of those, Leo Spondylos, in 1055–1057 reached very high position having become a head of Emperor’s administration at Michael VI. However after the resignation of Leo Spondylos his relatives lost their influence as they had no significant connections and support among capital’s bureaucratic elite.
