Abstract: This article is dedicated to the problem of the status of pontificatus within cursus honorum in the Roman Republic (IV–I centuries BC). Roman statesmen in IV–II centuries BC did not consider places within collegium pontificum as honores. However in the first century BC we can track some changes in character of presentation of our sources. Sources of different types unequivocally specify that Roman nobility in first century BC included pontificatus in cursus honorum in the same row with magistracies. According to the author this situation shows a metamorphosis of political values of nobilitates in the case of post within collegium of pontiffs. The author connects this evolution with changes in a way of acquisition of priestly boards which occurred according to Lex Domitia 104/103 BC. The author suggests that the fact of transformation of pontificatus in an elective office (with carrying out of the intense preelection companies) has essentially changed the valuable attitude of political elite to this post.
