Abstract

This article aims to show that the Old Icelandic common noun hallr ‘stone, boulder’ has the attributes of a proper noun. The Old Icelandic hallr has o n l y nominative singular grammemes as well as animate allusions. Such selective grammatical forms are due to the actualization of the mytho-poetic status of its denotation – the millstone of the magical mill Grotti on which the giantesses Fenja and Menja grind riches and happiness for the king Frodi, who is isofunctional to the demiurge in the creation myth.
