Abstract: The paper deals with the division of anthroponymy into two systems: actual and potential names. Their differences are apparent in their semantics, functional features, in their relationship to language and speech, in belonging to active vocabulary, and in other parameters. Potential anthroponymy is a relatively stable system. The fact that potential personal names are preserved in a language causes the continuity of anthroponymy in the historical aspect. Actual anthroponymy is not stable. It is characterized by constant development and appearance of new items. The ambiguous character of anthroponymy demands more detailed research into the spesifics of personal name.
