Often accompanying letters, gifts made an integral part of communication between Byzantine intellectuals. Letters would contain information on the type of gifts, the recipients' opinion, gratitude, and criticism of the gifts received, as well as descriptions of situations on which they were received. All these facts showing the types and meaning of gift-giving as part of life throw light on an important aspect of Byzantine culture. |
