Abstract

The undergrowth study took place in the urban forests and green zones of Ekaterinburg. The study has established that the undergrowth density increases in the urban forests, often so much so that there are nearly continuous shrubs consisting mostly of raspberry bushes, about 1,5 m high. The dense undergrowth consisting of the red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.), an eutrophic and nitrophilous plant, results from enriching the soil in the urban forests with digested litter and human and animal waste as well as from frequent local running fires. Apart from the traditional forest species, some invasive plants are found within the undergrowth. The species composition of the undergrowth in the suburban forests appears to be more versatile thanks to introduction of a number of bushes. The study analyzes the abundance of the undergrowth, its distribution by elevations, the ratio between traditional forest species and invasive plants as well as the frequency of the dominant and the codominants in terms of their recreational digression.
