| Abstract: | The article discusses the issues of colonization of the territory of modern Karelia by the Yem tribe, as well as its role in the making of the Karelian ethnos. Migration of people from the territory of Finland to Karelia, is probably evidenced in geographical names with the stem Hämeh- ‘Yem’ that are perhaps the sole source to attest to the presence here of population from Hjame. Meanwhile, some place-names in Hämeh- may originate not from the ethnonym, but instead be motivated by poor illumination of the geographical object, cf. Balt.-Finn. stem hämä- : hämä-rä ‘dark’. |
