Abstract

The main aim of the paper is to present and summarize the information from the known seals (more than 130 specimens) of Byzantine logothetai of the genikon originating from Bulgaria and Crimea. The following aspects have been examined: 1. General historical survey of the Byzantine financial institution logothesion of the genikon and the place and role of its titular – the logothetes of the genikon; 2. Presentation of the quantitative and qualitative parameters of the seals of logothetai of the genikon from Bulgaria and Crimea; 3. The significance of the seals of logothetai of the genikon as historical sources in the following lines: a) An attempt for a partial reconstruction of the chronological order of the individuals at the head of the logothesion of the genikon in the IX–X centuries. b) The significance of the logothetes of the genikon in the political and economic life of Byzantium and the place of the logothetai of the genikon in the imperial rank hierarchy; c) Determining the specific features of the intensity of the correspondence of Byzantine logothetai of the genikon during the two centuries to Bulgaria (and its neighboring themes) and theme Cherson; d) The seals of Byzantine logothetai of the genikon as part of the general stream of sources for the history of the northern sector of the Byzantine policy in the IX–X centuries.
