Abstract:	The careful study of the historical documents and modern toponymy allows to reveal numerous variants of the name of the medieval small town Demon and to determine a hierarchy between them. In author’s opinion there are reasons to consider the name as an ascendant from the lost appellative of Baltic origin дhмя < demen with the meaning ‘dirt, топь’.
